The State of Open Source Workflow
Commercial workflow offerings have some competition. Open source (OS) workflow is now a viable contender in the workflow arena. Granted, most of the OS systems offer "workflow lite" capabilities, but they offset this with their laser focus on the customer's application. In addition, high-end OS systems do exist that rival high-end commercial systems in scale and robustness. OS workflow products also have some concrete advantages over commercial systems: for instance, they are easier to install and integrate, are less proprietary, and have a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). In the end, OS workflow will succeed for strategic market reasons; it's poised to invade a market that commercial vendors may substantially abandon for a promising business process management (BPM) one.
