There's an old Russian proverb that the cold warriors of the last century applied to nuclear disarmament talks: "Trust, but verify." American journalists have their own take on this bit of wisdom: "If your mother tells you that she loves you, check it out." The essence of these adages is the same: don't allow the size of your intellectual or emotional investment in a critical situation lead you to make potentially injurious assumptions.
