The Content Mirage

by Nick de Voil

You're familiar with the scene in countless old movies. A man suffering the last extremes of exhaustion and thirst drags himself across the burning desert sands. Raising his head for what surely must be the last time, he sees it: shimmering in the distance, a blue oasis with cool water and shady palm trees. Galvanizing one final superhuman effort, he manages to haul himself toward the water; but at the last minute, the vision vanishes. It was a nothing but a mirage. It appeared solid and meaningful but, in fact, had no substance.
