Tools for Innovation

by Brian J. Dooley

Supporting innovation is difficult because it cannot be controlled like other business processes. Innovation also values collaboration over competition and is derived from creative individuals whose actions and expectations tend to differ from the corporate norm. Innovation demands an environment that rewards new concepts, permits failure, and provides means and methods for collaboration -- a culture of innovation. It is found in R&D labs, but not exclusively, and some of its most important benefits can be made available only if it becomes part of standard operating practice.
