What Are We Going to Do About Alice?

by John Boddie

Alice has been a programmer here for 28 years. There are times when it seems like longer. She did some good stuff early on. She's still an OK programmer, I guess. She's late on a lot of her deliveries, but probably no more so than the rest of them. I've been told that when she does deliver her stuff, it seems to work. She knows the ins and outs of the old order entry system better than anyone else, and that's why we have her on the team developing the interfaces for the Web access. She won't do the Web stuff herself; she doesn't know Java and she's never actually developed a GUI application. We're thinking about getting a CICS/Web bridge tool in and maybe that will help us avoid some of the problems.
