Experienced Drivers Wanted: IT Innovation and Organizational Maturity

Information technology innovations produce their biggest effects on businesses that are either too young or too old to stand the jolt to their cultures without stumbling. This kind of culture shock is substantially reduced in "mature" organizations. Indeed, maturity is a hallmark of the resilient organization. On the personal level, we consider individuals "mature" when we find they can handle surprises, adversity, or unfairness in an unruffled manner. A mature person "has been around" or "is unflappable," we sometimes say. Mature people learn from experience. So do mature organizations.
