Toward Technology for Data Protection
A profusion of designs for privacy-enhancing technologies in the scientific literature has not led to successful deployments of products in the real world. Organizations seem more willing to invest in technology that allows them to continue to use customer data in some of their accustomed ways. At the same time, laws, industry self-regulation, and policy commitments have led to a need to control the collection, use, and distribution of personal information. This article will examine an emerging trend, the creation of technology to help implement the Fair Information Practices (FIPs). It will examine the origins, strengths, and weaknesses of these tools and place them in context with respect to a framework for thinking about the concept of privacy.
