Opening Statement
Late in 1991, I was at a port near Cork, Ireland, staring at a visiting Russian naval ship that was moored there. I had flown into Ireland the previous day for meetings at Motorola's nearby software development center. These were the last days of the Soviet Union, and I remember thinking how such Russian vessels no longer appeared threatening. Over a pint of Guinness, I chatted with my hosts about how these were extraordinary times; the global order of things was rapidly changing, and the world would never be the same again. Several years later, Andy Grove of Intel fame coined the term strategic inflection point, 1 which would well have defined the point that the world was at in 1991, as one of the world's superpowers imploded. It was an event of global proportions, and it changed the way business was conducted for both Eastern and Western companies alike. The age of global accord appeared close. 2
