Preventing IT Burnout: Opening Statement
If you mention the word "burnout" in a typical IT organization, you can count on two things. One, everyone will know what you're talking about. Two, everyone will squirm awkwardly if their managers are in the room, because burnout is not an officially sanctioned topic of conversation. Though burnout was a recognizable factor during the booming 1990s and the dot-com euphoria, it was less prevalent than it has become during the past two years of dot-com collapse, high-tech recession, and overall economic slowdown. It's still a topic that most senior managers would rather not confront, but it has become so prevalent and severe that some IT organizations have become almost completely dysfunctional. Hence, we felt that it was an important topic to discuss in this issue of Cutter IT Journal.
