Software development is a lot like magic. We electronically pull individual bits of data together and transform them into information. But the real power, the really magical thing, is that to build software, we pull individual people together. Out of individuals we build a synergy, a team that is greater than the sum of its individuals, and out of that alchemy each individual becomes more powerful than he or she was. It looks like magic, but underneath it is a set of learnable skills. Those skills are called emotional competencies, and they can be grouped under the name "emotional intelligence" (EI).
