The CIO: "Career Is Onward"

There is an old aphorism that CIO really stands for "career is over." The widespread claim that the average tenure of a CIO is 18 months (a figure that may be more folklore than fact) suggests that failure is the norm. Perhaps, though, CIO should stand for "career is onward." The "job" of the CIO should be to change the job of the CIO and then move on. The job of the next CIO is to do the same.
