Taylorism and scientific management revolutionized manufacturing processes and created mental models that influenced thinking about the efficient organization of work. For example, the job of a manager became to study tasks and technologies, define the optimum sequence of work, and then instruct, motivate, and control workers. The job of a worker was to follow the instructions and incentives. Under this line of thinking, the managers know better and therefore make the decisions, while the workers just obey and make the product or service. Thus was established the chain of command, borrowed from the military, and the hierarchy of managers performing multilevel planning and control within the confines of controlled information disclosure. However, retaining this organizational setup in modern knowledge-based enterprises is a recipe for disaster and market extinction.
