Iridium Satellite Collision in Space
You might have seen the recent news reports about the collision between US and Russian communication satellites (see "Debris Spews Into Space After Satellites Collide," New York Times, 11 February 2009). The US satellite was one of the Iridium satellites. What wasn't reported and you probably don't know is that an object database management system (ODBMS) is an important part of the Iridium system. It is a technology with which I've been involved since the late 1980s. So I'm adding some technical detail to this story. (For background on ODBMSs, see www.service-architecture.com/object-oriented-databases/articles/.)
