Good Soldier Syndrome: How to Say "Yes We Can't," Part 2

by Doug DeCarlo

In Part 1 of this two-part series (" Good Soldier Syndrome: The Perils of a Can-Do Attitude," 26 September 2002), I wrote about Dan, a good-natured project manager who was heading a complex computer-aided design and engineering project that would support about 100 engineers. Dan was suffering from Good Soldier Syndrome (GSS). GSS is a disease that causes people to say "Yes" to just about any request. They jump at the opportunity to be of service and often make promises they can't keep. Dan got himself in trouble by continually overpromising and underdelivering.
