Innovation and Great Products

by Jim Highsmith

Great explorations and innovations flow from inspirational leaders and teams. Cook, Magellan, and Columbus were inspirational leaders with vision -- they persevered in the face of monumental obstacles, not the least of which was fear of the unknown. Magellan left his home country of Portugal for Spain, where after years of dealing with the entrenched bureaucracy trying to scuttle his plans, he finally launched his five-ship fleet on 3 October 1519. On 6 September 1522, Victoria, the last of the ships, sailed into a Spanish port without Magellan, who had died in the Philippines after completing the most treacherous part of the journey -- establishing a route around the Cape of Horn through the Straits of Magellan, and sailing across the vast Pacific ocean for the first time (Tim Joyner, Magellan ).
