Agile Project Management Tip Number 3: Creating a North Star Vision As an Aid in Project Navigation

Where are we going and why? These are simple questions that should be answered at the start of every project and are, at least in theory, answered by the stakeholders and sponsors rather than by the project team itself. A problem arises when the team doesn't own the mission and the goal -- then what gets delivered never matches the desired result. Therefore, the third tip for an agile project manager is to understand how to craft a North Star vision as a way to provide direction to the project (for tips one and two, see "Ten Tips for an Agile Project Manager, Part 1," 10 August 2006 and "Agile Project Success Factors -- Redefining the Role of Planning," 7 September 2006).
