Emotion: What's in It for Me?
For people to take action -- such as to move to a new software development methodology, they have to care. Feelings inspire people to act. We make people care by appealing to things that matter to them. As the results from a recent Cutter Consortium survey indicate, the top four reasons for moving to Agile -- among those who have delivered an Agile project -- are improving customer satisfaction (83%; our survey indicates that successful agile teams had significantly higher customer satisfaction [85% positive] than did agile teams that did not go so well [only 23% positive]), improving cycle time (81%), improving quality (57%), and improving employee morale (34%). As benevolent as our survey respondents might be, they must have ulterior motives for striving for these business goals.
