Introducing Agile Techniques in a Small Team Environment: A Case Study

by Frank Maurer, Chris Mann

While there is much fuss about agile methods in the software industry, empirical data is just starting to appear. Although these studies and the abundant anecdotal evidence are valuable starting points, what is lacking are detailed evaluations of agile methods over a longer period of time in industrial contexts. Here we present the results of a long-term industrial case study on the introduction of agile techniques into a small software team environment. The goal of the study was to highlight the benefits and challenges of moving toward an agile development approach and to collect empirical data to back up anecdotal results. We accompanied and observed an industrial software development team over a two-year time frame and gathered both qualitative and quantitative data on what we saw.
