Are Agile Methods and Enterprise Architecture Compatible? Yes, with Effort

by Jim Watson, Michael Rosen, Kurt Guenther

Agile methods (AM) and enterprise architecture (EA) are emerging disciplines for effectively planning and developing computing systems. In practice, they often seem incompatible. EA deals with enterprise-level issues: connecting business strategy to IT, improving consistency, reducing redundancy, providing project roadmaps, and supporting business agility. AM makes development teams more productive at delivering high-quality code by embracing the change that inevitably happens during software development. This results in a methodology characterized by emergent design, focused iterations, test-driven development, and frequent exchange of implicit knowledge.
