A New Era of Software Project Management: Part III -- Agile Project Management and the Stealth Fighter
One of the most exciting examples of outstanding project management is undoubtedly the development of the Stealth fighter plane at Lockheed. The inspiring story of the project is recounted in Ben Rich's book Skunk Works [1]. Rich, who led the Stealth fighter team between 1975 and 1991, summed up his management philosophy thus: "We encouraged our people to work imaginatively, to improvise and try unconventional approaches to problem solving, and then got out of their way." As Rich goes on to say, "A successful Skunk Works[1] will always demand a strong leader and a work environment dominated by highly motivated employees."
