In this Executive Update, the second in a series of three on software project management, we will begin by examining the criteria for selecting software project managers. We will then consider the role of management training as a key factor in helping managers understand what they will be wearing as they lead the proverbial big parade. Next, we will look at the real fabric from which a project manager's parade clothes are (or should be) made, namely accurate project status information. Finally, we will examine whether the concept of magic clothes is a necessity in software development -- or, in other words, can we forgo the magic and rely on a good process?
