Corporate Killing? Please Stand by ... (Death by IT?)

by Carl Pritchard

In the UK, the clock is ticking on legislation pushing for harsher penalties and accountability relating to corporate manslaughter. To date, despite seven years of heady discussion, all action has been reviewed, tabled, re-reviewed, and re-tabled time and again. Why? Because everyone, even the government's own ministers, seem to be running scared. The fear stems from legislation that would render corporations liable for deaths related to corporate decisions and actions. If an employee builds a poor widget and someone was injured by that widget, the individual would be liable, the corporation could be liable, and the supplier of the widget materials could potentially be liable. The consequences associated with the information technologies universe could be staggering.
