Organizational Fire Operations

by Rick Brenner

When new problems surface one after another and we enter firefight mode, we're in a regime in which normal operating procedures themselves become problems. In three previous articles, I've explored how organizations become vulnerable to organizational fire, how we can manage fire to extinguish it, and how we can manage the people who fight the fires (see " Firefight Mode: How Did We Ever Get into This Fix ?" 21 July 2005, " Managing Organizational Fire," 18 August 2005, and " Managing Firefighting Teams," 22 September 2005). While these practices can help, standard procedures and political perspectives can prevent even the most dedicated "firefighters" from bringing organizational fire under control.
