Always on Your Mind: Security and Compliance for 2008
According to the results of a recent Cutter survey on IT trends for 2008 (see Cutter Benchmark Review, Vol. 8, No. 1), IS security continues to be a challenge for companies. We are seeing a trend develop in the way companies implement intrusion detection. Last year, a little more than half of our respondents indicated that they were considering network-based intrusion detection. Similarly, this year, we find that 57% are using the network to detect intrusions. Compared to those applications that specifically monitor particular systems or are server- or host-based, this continuing trend to defend computing resources at the network level provides an insight into where managers believe intrusions are most likely to occur and, more important, allows more flexibility in the design of the system architecture. Surprisingly, however, nearly one-third of our respondents don't use intrusion detection at all for their systems.
