Will My Risk Management Program Fail?

by Robert N. Charette

Last year, I surveyed the state of risk management practice for Cutter Consortium ( The State of Risk Management 2002: Hype or Reality?). The survey indicated that the practice of risk management within IT projects is growing very rapidly and that most managers view the use of risk management as a major contributor to IT project success. The survey also found that risk management practice leans more toward the novice than expert range, with most formal approaches to practicing risk management (i.e., those that are disciplined, repeatable, and measurable) being used in IT projects that are less than three years old.
