Why Care About IT Risk Management?

by George Westerman

What do you think of when I say "IT risk management"? If you're like most people, you think of managing risks on an IT project. That is, making sure that an implementation comes in on time and on budget. Or controlling the negative effects of missing a target. Cutter Business Technology Council Fellows Tom DeMarco and Tim Lister have a wonderful book on the topic (Waltzing with Bears: Managing Risk on Software Projects), as do many other writers. It's an important topic, but project risk management is only one part of managing IT risk. Project risk management is about making sure the next big thing happens as planned.
