The Steering Committee and the Executive Sponsor: Foundations to Outsourcing Success

Early in an outsourcing evaluation, it is important to establish a steering committee that will take leadership responsibility, perform the analysis, and make the decisions and recommendations to the board. The people chosen for the steering committee depend on what is in scope for outsourcing consideration and the circumstances surrounding the outsourcing decision. The steering committee is usually chaired by the executive sponsor, and a board-driven outsourcing initiative requires the highest possible level of executive sponsorship even if the scope is narrow.
