Large enterprises have been hammered by auditors who love to prepare letters that chastise the companies' lack of internal and external security. Smaller organizations are scared to death of viruses and worms, while the surviving dot-coms are painfully aware of their need to make sure that Internet-based transaction processing is secure. As online business-to-business and business-to-consumer transactions increase, organizations will have no choice but to deploy digital signature, public key infrastructure (PKI), and perhaps even biometric authentication technologies. This stuff is getting very complicated very quickly.
