What's Next for End-Users in this Enterprise Software Soap Opera?
In June of 2003, I didn't believe that Oracle's purchase of PeopleSoft would be good for the enterprise applications market because it would limit competition. I still believe this to be true. Moreover, I believe that the judge who presided over the case, who essentially found for Oracle, must have a terrific lack of vision not to see how Oracle's swallowing up of PeopleSoft will lead to fewer product choices -- not to mention reduced innovation -- for end-user companies when it comes to enterprise software. Yes, I've heard all the talk by Oracle lawyers and company reps about how Microsoft may enter the enterprise software market in the future. That may be true, but the fact of the matter is that Microsoft is not a serious enterprise player today. It may be one day, but it isn't now. And an awful lot of things may happen in the future.
