Managing vendor relationships has become a necessary core competency for any IT management team, in any size business, in any type of industry. Many types and variations of outsourcing models are available today. Some service providers target a specific IT function, while others specialize in traditional business operations such as payroll, human resources, or facilities and inventory management. There has been a lot of media attention recently, most of it focusing on the economics, risks, politics, and implications related to offshore outsourcing. If you haven't yet, it is probably useful to gain a better perspective of what IT outsourcing can do for your organization. In doing so, you'll be better positioned to deal with IT outsourcing proposals whenever an economic justification for such a move is presented at your company.
