In 1992, William Davidow and Michael Malone coauthored The Virtual Corporation: Structuring and Revitalizing the Corporation for the 21st Century [3], which suggested that we were entering an era in which technology innovation was enabling companies to fundamentally change the way they operated, allowing them to rely less on full-time staff and resources and more on freelance professionals and third-party services.
