Disaster Recovery and Security Issues in Outsourcing

by Brian J. Dooley

Security and disaster recovery concerns are becoming ever more closely intertwined as network-accessible data stores become increasingly critical to business. This makes attention to security and disaster recovery planning imperative. Outsourcing magnifies these concerns. As more and more critical business processes are handled by external service providers, what guarantees does a firm have that its critical data will not be compromised through some event at the service provider? And if data is compromised or lost, what hope is there for recovery? The client company cannot control the actions of the service provider beyond what it has written into the contract. And, even here, unless treated with care, interpretations might differ widely as to areas of responsibility.
