Outsourcing and Other Keys to CIO Success

The Internet economy challenges executives to rethink the notion of the traditional, vertically integrated firm in favor of a more flexible organization. The self-sufficient company is being replaced with interdependent organizations. New classes of business-to-business services and industries are emerging, and companies of all sizes are being realigned through mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, alliances, partnerships, and outsourcing relationships. These major shifts are challenging the traditional role of the senior IT executive (the CIO). Figure 1 illustrates the pressures of the e-business economy on the role of the CIO.
