Software projects are a complicated assembly of tasks and activities that (hopefully) deliver functionality to a user. The complexity of the process involves a price tag and a degree of risk, which causes many organizations to turn to outsourcing. The process of building software follows a lifecycle that begins with an idea or concept and evolves through a series of activities until functionality is delivered. Which parts of the lifecycle can be outsourced? Does the response to this question vary based on the outsourcing scenario or on whether the work is offshored?
