Back in 1993 when it first came out, the Apple Newton created quite a sensation, not only for what it did but also for what it didn't quite do. The fate of the Newton wasn't helped at all when Gary Trudeau, the creator of the Doonesbury cartoon strip, documented the problems with the Newton's vaunted handwriting interpreter. For the next few weeks, the troubles Doonesbury's Mike character had with his latest electronic toy multiplied.
