There is a point when materials go from one form to another -- for example, from solid to liquid, from liquid to gas. Scientists have explored this for centuries. This phenomenon is a quantum occurrence, it happens all at once. The same thing happens in many other areas as well. In technology adoption and nuclear physics, there is the idea of critical mass: below a certain point, nothing happens, then "bam."
