Google Drops a Really Big Shoe

Finally, there's a good answer to the question on everybody's lips "Where did I put that (e-mail, document, spreadsheet, etc.) anyway?" For a couple of years now, Microsoft has been promising a new file and indexing system that would be available in its next-generation operating system Longhorn, which would make it possible to get anything, anywhere, instantly -- sort of like Google on the desktop. Now, while Microsoft has continued to push out the delivery of Longhorn, Google has delivered something exactly like Google -- it's called, not surprisingly, Google Desktop, and it may be that by the time Microsoft delivers its search-anywhere technology, nobody will care.
