2004-2005: What's Happening
In 2004 I am glum. The Internet is full of, to use the technical term, dangerous trash. Earlier this month, my colleague, Lou Mazzucchelli, e-mailed around an article reporting that an unpatched Windows XP SP1 system can expect to last about four minutes before it is attacked, compromised, and enlisted in a rogue botnet. That means that before the cable guy has started up his truck, your average user's machine is toast via that new high-speed cable modem. And you know that that average Internet surfer is clueless.
