The First Measure of Productivity

by Ken Orr

I was recently at a presentation on template-based code generation. In this presentation, the two principal developers talked about their successes in developing templates and then using those templates to generate tens of thousands of lines of code. The company involved was a small software company that had a product that had fallen a generation behind the competition. In order to catch up, the company had to redevelop its entire product, changing its entire approach. But the company didn't have a lot of resources or a lot of time. Luckily, a great deal of the code that needed to be developed was highly repetitive. By using a very powerful application generation tool and leveraging a set of templates, the company was able to meet its objectives, exceeding what it set out to do.
