Representing an important aspect of supply chain management, the idea of risk pooling has been a topic of study for many years within operations research. Made famous by Prof. David Simchi-Levi in his book Designing and Managing the Supply Chain (2000, first edition), and as part of public lectures addressed to industry, risk pooling is an effective way to reduce safety stock and increase customer service.
