Product Development and Agile Methods

by Jim Highsmith, The Cutter Business Technology Council

Somewhat obscured by the industry's fascination with the Internet and the rise and fall of the dot-coms has been the continuous growth in the software content of product -- from automobiles to cell phones to printers to sophisticated data gathering and analysis instruments for everything from oil exploration to chemical analysis. Product engineering has a unique set of problems not encountered in mainstream IT development, but the underlying need for flexibility and speed is even more prominent because of the direct revenue impact of product development. Because of this direct tie between business value and software development, product development organizations are increasingly leading the movement toward agile development methods and will continue to be early market adopters of these approaches.
