Wireless Location-Based Services: Finding Your Way Out of the Box

by Ian S. Hayes

Advances in wireless networks and positioning technology have given us the ability to determine the exact location of a mobile device. The possibilities and implications of this fact are enormous. Think about it: a person, piece of equipment, or valuable shipment can always be found and tracked. We can know where they are, how best to direct them to where they should be, and can determine when they will arrive. If we carry a mobile telephone or a personal digital assistant (PDA) or drive a properly equipped vehicle, we can never get lost and can access an amazing array of useful information tailored to our surroundings. Knowledge of location enriches wireless Web content, enables greater personalization and customization, and expands the number of high-value mobile applications. It helps its providers achieve greater differentiation, provide better service, and add new revenue-generating offerings.
