Following the Money: Operational and Strategic Priorities

by Stephen J. Andriole

This Executive Update is the fourth installment of our "Following the Money" series, which outlines the results of an August 2004 Cutter Consortium survey on technology spending in 2004-2005. In Part III (Vol. 5, No. 21), we began our first of two Updates that examine operational and strategic spending priorities. Last time, I presented a visual of spending above the line (strategic technology) and spending below the line (operational technology). If you recall, above the line represents management and big front-office applications. Below the line is for back-office applications and the infrastructure that enables digital contact. Operational technology is what's becoming commoditized; strategic technology is alive and well -- and still a competitive differentiator.
