Open source software (OSS) is a fact of life nowadays, even for the most down-to-earth, conservative CIO. It is difficult to open an IT newspaper or magazine, browse the Web, or even read your e-mail without having your attention drawn to OSS. But a peculiar kind of cognitive dissonance is apt to set in after a while: we certainly recognize that there is an elephant in the room but nevertheless manage to keep at bay the idea that it might affect us directly.
