Is the Standard of Programming Rising or Falling?
As computers come to affect more and more of our lives, they bring their quota of petty (and not so petty) annoyances. Applications that pop up obscure error messages or just stop responding to input, operating systems that hang or crash, and software that gives us the wrong answers -- who has not had such experiences? Throw in the expense and inconvenience of defending against worms, viruses, malware and phishing attacks, and the difficulty of getting the most obvious of bugs fixed -- let alone having vendors make requested changes -- and it is easy to see why so many people feel that the standard of programming is not what it used to be.
