Two Pervasive Challenges

It's been 16 years since Mark Weiser published his vision of what he coined "ubiquitous computing" (aka pervasive computing) in which he stated that "the most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it" [7]. Despite a decade and a half of exponential improvement and innovation in computing hardware, network infrastructure, and service delivery, I'm not convinced we've moved much closer to realizing Weiser's vision. So we're faced with a (deceptively) simple question. Why not?
