Francisco Javier Gómez Díaz (Javier) has been Grupo Bimbo’s CIO since 1997. Javier is currently responsible for delivering the IS services, through an outsourcing contract with EDS, to Bimbo’s operations worldwide. He also leads the efforts to assure that the company’s projects related to IS meet its established objectives. Some of those projects include an Oracle ERP implementation; salesforce automation through 32,000 handheld computers; implementing business intelligence using datawarehousing and analytical tools; customization of Oracle’s CRM to meet the specific requirements of the direct delivery store business model used by Bimbo; and, in 2002 and 2006, negotiating the outsourcing contract.
Javier has held several positions during his 24 year career with Bimbo. Prior to becoming CIO, Javier was Logistics VP, responsible for the shipping and fleet maintenance and administration for Mexican operations, serving 16 factories, 300 depos and 18,000 company-owned vehicles. His duties included process design, tracking KPI’s, training (dispatchers and drivers), and government regulations compliance.
In 2004, Javier was acknowledged as the Latinamerican CIO of the Year by Oracle Magazine and also Mexico’s CIO of the Year, by InformationWeek magazine. Javier is a member of the Oracle CIO Advisory Board.
Javier holds a Mechanical Engineering degree, an MBA from Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM); Certificates from the D1 program in Business Administration, as well as the Alta Dirección en Innovación Tecnologica (ADIT), an Innovation program from Intituto Panamericano de Alta Dirección de Empresa, and from the Harvard Business School Delivery Information Services program.
Grupo Bimbo is one of the most important bakery companies in the world, with revenue of 5.2 billion dollars in 2005 (sales abroad representing 31%). It operates 74 plants and 3 trading agencies, with more than 83,000 associates in 16 countries. Its distribution network is one of the largest in the American Continent, with over 31,900 company-owned routes, visiting more than 1,000,000 points of sale, almost daily. Its portfolio has more than 5,000 products.
