Q: What has been your experience to date using Hadoop/MapReduce?

Recent Cutter research sought to determine how organizations are using high-performance analytic databases. We found that more organizations use high-performance analytic databases to support specific, compute-intensive applications intended to supplement the analytic processing of their main data warehouse than do those using them to serve as their main data warehouse. According to Curt Hall, "High-performance analytic databases offer organizations a way to supercharge their existing DW environments by offloading and accelerating high-demand and/or complex analytic processing. Benefits include a significant reduction in query processing times as well as reduced data storage requirements due to the use of columnar storage and aggressive compression techniques.

Still, our research shows that organizations are also turning to high-performance analytic databases to serve as their primary DW databases. This is apparent from the finding that approximately a third of respondents that use such solutions say that their organizations are utilizing them in such a capacity."
