Are software development tools about to make a comeback? Compared to the heydays of the late 1980s and early 1990s, software development tools have been in the relative doldrums for some time. Over a decade ago, entire conferences were dedicated to CASE (computer-aided software engineering) tools. In yesteryear, conference expositions were filled with multiple vendors, today nearly all those companies have gone out of business or been swallowed up by others. The field was left to a few players -- with Rational and Microsoft in the lead.
