Agile Project Success Factors -- Redefining the Role of Planning
A recent discussion on NewGrange (a project management discussion list I moderate) had to do with the role of planning in ensuring project success. In my mind, planning is a perfectly good word that has gotten hijacked. Rather than referring to a simple lightweight approach that stresses preparedness, it's been blown out of all proportion and is now synonymous with weeks, months, and, unfortunately, sometimes years of trying to decide what needs to be done and how. And if that wasn't bad enough, projects that fail always use the excuse that they just didn't do enough advanced planning to ensure success.
